Alex Johnson had a good feeling about this.
He was an engineer, a man of facts, and not given to flights of fancy.
But that didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate a good mystery or have a sense of curiosity.
He just preferred his to be grounded in reality.
So when the massive oil extraction machine that stood before him emitted a low hum, he knew he was about to solve a great one.
The machine was like nothing he’d ever seen before.
It was a giant, hulking mass of steel and machinery, labyrinthine in its complexity, with pipes snaking in every direction and chambers that spanned miles.
It was a technological marvel, the most advanced machine ever designed by man.
And Alex was about to figure out how it worked.
“How are you feeling?”
Sarah asked, her bright eyes shining behind her glasses.
Her curly hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she clutched her tablet to her chest like it was a teddy bear.
“Excited,” Alex said.
“How about you?”
“Excited,” she said with a grin.
She always seemed to be excited, the eternal optimist who looked at the world through rose-colored glasses and was always up for an adventure.
They made an odd pair—him with his analytical mind and meticulous attention to detail, her with her impulsive nature and boundless energy—but they’d been best friends since college and had been working together as engineers ever since.
Sarah raised her tablet and snapped a picture of the machine.
She’d been documenting their journey from the very beginning, taking pictures of every step along the way, from the moment they’d first approached the machine to the point where they were standing in front of it right now.

At first, it was difficult to make out what exactly they were seeing, but as they watched, they realized that there were figures moving around and between the buildings—figures that looked a lot like humans but were composed entirely of the same glowing lines and structures as the buildings themselves!
Alex and Sarah couldn’t believe what they were seeing—life forms or intelligences existing in a form that was completely different from anything on Earth!
It was like something out of a science fiction movie or a video game, and yet here it was before their very eyes, in all its glory!
As they watched the figures move around the cityscape with a fluidity that seemed impossible given their composition and structure, they realized just how significant this discovery truly was—it was proof that there was something out there beyond our world, something intelligent and capable of building vast and complex networks of code and structures.
And now they had the opportunity to uncover its secrets and learn everything they could about it!
